Flooring Options For Your Home

Article Word Count: 591

Whether you are building a new home or remodeling an existing one, you will want to think carefully about the flooring you choose to install. Choosing the right flooring can make a world of difference in the look and feel of each room. There are many things to take into consideration. Are you more interested in comfort or appearance? Do you want a more casual look or a highly sophisticated feel? What is your budget? Will this be a high traffic area? Are there kids involved?

Carpet is a popular choice for families especially if there are infants who may be in the crawling phase or toddlers who are likely to fall down. Carpeting is the most comfortable flooring option depending on how thick the fibers are. Carpet is also the most insulating flooring option. Houses with carpeting tend to feel more warm and cozy. Debris is easily cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. Spills are more of a hassle to get up but certain brands can be purchased that will resist stains. Steam cleaners can be used periodically to deep clean or get out tough stains.

Hardwood flooring is very popular due to the elegant look it creates. Unlike carpeting, hardwood floors are just as the name suggests, hard. Hardwood floor is easily swept with a broom. Spills can also be easily wiped up. It can scratch and wear down but it can be refinished, if necessary, to look like new again. Rugs can also be used on top of hardwood flooring to change the look of the room at any time. Hardwood flooring is expensive, however it tends to increase the homes overall value and is used as a selling point on many real estate listings.

Laminate flooring is a popular choice these days. Laminating together different materials such as resin and wood fiber makes laminate. Laminate can be made to look like any type of flooring, but it usually mimics hardwood flooring. Laminate is more durable than hardwood. It will not scratch or stain easily. Unlike hardwood flooring, laminate cannot be refinished. Laminate is easy to clean and maintain.

Tile is used mainly in bathrooms, foyers, and kitchens, although it can be placed anywhere. Tile comes in a variety of different styles and patterns. Rooms can vary from unique and colorful to neutral or sophisticated depending on the pattern of tile chosen. Tile flooring comes in several different materials. Ceramic tile consists of red or terracotta clay. Porcelain tile is a light colored clay. Vinyl tile is made from plastic. Vinyl tile is usually cheaper than ceramic or porcelain tile. It is easier to install and maintain.

Flooring can be purchased online or at specialty flooring stores. It is also readily available at all the big home improvement chains. Dedicated salespeople are usually available to answer any questions you may have and help you pick the right flooring to meet your needs. Installation services are almost always available for a fee, however some types of flooring such as tile can be installed in a do-it-yourself manner with the help of a class or training manual. Choosing and installing the right flooring is important. Your floor is something that you will see everyday and once it is installed you will have to live with it for at least several years.
